When selling certain types of products, you may be required to attach additional add-on charges for things like government-mandated fees. To do so, you need the ability to add a fee on that cannot be taken off without the removal of a product.
With a new addition to our Discount Rule functionality, you can add on additional fees via the use of a virtual product. In the same way you can give a product free with purchase using discount rules, you can use the same rules to add a product that has an additional fee.
How it Works
The process allows for the addition of a line item highlighting the fee being charged, separate from the cost of the item. It links the two together to ensure a buyer can’t remove the fee without removing the item from the cart. This offers transparency as to what’s being charged, while avoiding any risks of the fee not being charged when a business is required to collect it.
Setting Up the Feature
The basic functionality requires three steps:
- The rules leverage a hidden Virtual Product (one that isn’t visible in your store) to be able to effectively add the add-on SKU. So the process starts with the creation of that product.
- A product attribute is then created that enables the ability to attach attributes to each product confirming the fee that is charged when a product is purchased.
- Finally, a Discount Rule is set up that ensures the fee is added when the products are placed in the cart.
An additional optional step can be taken to provide more clarity in the cart of exactly what the fee is for and why it’s being charged, to help with clarity to your buyers.
The full step by step directions on how to configure these rules can be found in our Support library.
